Anne:
Thanks for your thoughts. (I was thinking
the same thing, but wanted some confirmation.) The artist, Ella K. Mewhinney,
was a local artist, but she is no longer living.
Thanks,

Since the word Untitled is not actually the title of the work, I would not
italicize it. Some artists do actually title their works Untitled, but if there is no title, I
would try to make this clear by not using italics. I think I just said the same
thing twice. Is the artist still alive, and local? If so, I would ask what he
or she would prefer.

Subject: labeling untitled
artworks
Hello Everyone:
I am working on labels for an upcoming exhibit of paintings
by a local artist. There will be approximately 50 works in the exhibit, and
only about 5 of them have a title. So my questions are: What is standard
procedure for formatting labels (and catalog listings) for a group of works
such as this one? Is the word “untitled” supposed to be italicized,
like one would italicize an actual title? As the curator, is it okay for me to
put an arbitrary descriptor in the label so the viewer can refer to the catalog
and know which of the 45+ untitled works is being addressed?
Are either of the below formats appropriate? (I do not plan
to put the artist’s name on each label because she is the only artist in
the exhibit.)
Untitled (zinnias in teal vase), n.d. Oil on canvas,
36” x 28 ˝”. Collection of Mr. and Mrs. John Smith.

Thanks for any and all help!
Sincerely,
