Job Description:

 Responsible for oversight and supervision of 10 historic sites within the Historic Sites Division including Casa Navarro, Eisenhower Birthplace, Fulton Mansion, Landmark Inn, Magoffin Home, National Museum of the Pacific War, Sam Bell Maxey, Sam Rayburn House Museum, Starr Family Home and Varner-Hogg Plantation. Oversight and supervision include, for each site, prioritizing needs and resources; monitoring budget and expenditures; hiring, supervision and development of site managers and other key staff; preparing recommendations to the deputy executive director for Historic Sites with regard to budgeting, program needs and personnel, including disciplinary actions for staff; overseeing operational issues including review of interpretive plans and programs, marketing, development projects and collections management in coordination with appropriate division staff. Employee is the primary division liaison with friends groups whose good will and support are vital to effective delivery of visitor services, and represents the division with other partners, special interest groups, community officials, professional colleagues and others as needed. Employee will identify new opportunities and resources available to the sites/program which can expand or enhance the program.

 

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

• Supervises Historic Site Managers, directing, prioritizing work and supporting them.

• Allocates financial and human resources among sites in consultation with the deputy executive director of Historic Sites.

• Approves purchases and spending by sites and museums.

• Recommends disciplinary review, merit increases and other actions needed, based on employee performance.

• Reviews and recommends approval of Friends group annual plans and reports.

• Approves exhibit scripts, strategic and interpretive plans and other site plans/documents.

• Participates in the approval process for selecting contractors for work at the sites individually or collectively.

• Oversees the completion of and monitors required performance reports, and recommends appropriate changes.

• Develops policy and procedure manuals.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

(License, Education, Experience):

 GENERAL QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES:

Experience and Education: Masters Degree in history, archeology, American Studies, Museum Studies or closely related field plus at least five (5) years of experience in historic or archeological sites management. A bachelor's degree plus a minimum of three (3) years of experience can be substituted for the master's degree. Experience in supervision, budgeting and operations is required.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Knowledge of the philosophy, principles, practices, methods and techniques used in the care and preservation of historic sites, and in the care, cataloging, restoration, preservation and exhibit activities involving collections of historic or other items.

• Knowledge of the principles and practices of administration applicable to managing historic sites, including employee supervision and evaluation of employee performance; interpretation, collections, safety and operational components.

• Knowledge of historic and archeological research methodology, sources and techniques appropriate for maximum utilization of a facility's special features and collections for educational and promotional purposes.

• Ability to exercise discrimination and good judgment in determining acceptance of items to augment a facility's collections or special features.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other agency and division employees and with public and private groups and individuals concerned with a site and its areas of interest.

• Ability to interpret, orally and in writing, a facility's purpose and significance as well as agency and division goals and programs.
