Seeking Textile Conservator for the North Carolina Museum of History:

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

Working Title of position: Textile Conservator.  The NC Museum of History seeks a professional conservator to preserve the Museum’s costume & textile collection, comprised of men’s, women’s and children’s civilian clothing, military uniforms, household textiles, and the Museum’s extensive collection of banners and flags.  The Textile Conservator will be responsible for condition & treatment reports, stabilization techniques, vacuuming, wet cleaning, laboratory maintenance and dressing mannequins.  This position will train and supervise volunteers, interns and assistants and will prepare costumes and textiles for an active exhibition program.  The Textile Conservator will also respond to patron requests regarding the care of privately owned costumes and textiles.  Some night and weekend work and overnight travel is required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

This position requires expert-level skills in handling antique and period textile items and in the conservation techniques and practices required to properly care for these collections.  Thorough knowledge of textile science, costume and textile history and conservation standards, ethics, principles and practices including stabilization, wet cleaning and vacuuming techniques is needed for this position.

The successful applicant should possess a demonstrated knowledge of organic and inorganic chemistry, and physics as they pertain to textile conservation and of textile science, costume and textile history and conservation practices.

The ability to work cooperatively and communicate effectively with diverse staff, volunteers, and patrons is important, as is the ability to safely work in a textile conservation laboratory setting with detergents, bleaches, and other chemicals are required for this work.  Applicant should possess the physical ability to sustain conservation tasks for extended periods of time.  Additional experience and/or training in conducting chemical treatments such as electrolytic, electrochemical reduction of corrosion, or closely related activities are preferred.
