Thanks to everyone who responded to my question.  I am first going to see if the county has a bar code system that they'd prefer to use, and if not, then recommend the Acryloid B-72/67 system, plus sewing twill tapes, etc.  It's easy enough to find the lacquers already prepared so that I don't have to weigh and mix anything, and, as we all agree, it's a better system in the long-run for the objects.  Though they are all reproductions, many of them represent substantial investments of public funds, so it's best to treat them right!
