The Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) is accepting applications for two Curators of Musical Instruments and a Curatorial Assistant. In partnership with the President and Director, the Board, the Curatorial Department, and other MIM departments, the Curators will help build, interpret, and care for the MIM collection of approximately 3,000 instruments. Specific duties will include: Helping to build the collection by working with the MIM team to identify, evaluate, document, and acquire appropriate instruments for exhibit, educational, or reference purposes. Developing content for exhibits including instruments, video, audio, and contextual elements. Preparing and presenting acquisitions recommendations to the Acquisitions Committee. Identifying, evaluating and acquiring instruments in own area of expertise. Identifying potential sources for long-term loans and donations of musical instruments and working with MIM staff and Board to secure these loans and gifts. Building relationships with scholars, collectors, other museum curators and professional societies. Contributing information for label copy and writing articles and catalogs relating to the collection. One of the curator positions will be focused on the music and instruments of Europe. An advanced degree in musicology or music history with training in organology is required, along with extensive knowledge of and interest in European musical instruments and music. The other curator position is focused on the music and instruments of Latin America and/or Africa. An advanced degree in ethnomusicology with a focus on Africa and/or Latin America is required, along with extensive knowledge of and interest in musical instruments. The ideal candidates must bring energy, vision, enthusiasm, and resourcefulness to these important positions. An ability to act quickly and with good judgment is paramount. Exceptional organizational, negotiation, problem-solving, and communication skills are required. Essential qualifications include: Ability to problem-solve, work both independently and collaboratively, and excel in a high performance team culture. Demonstrated success in building relationships with diverse people, such as collectors, other museum curators, and musicians. Some museum and collection management experience is desirable. MIM is also hiring a Curatorial Assistant for a full-time position providing clerical and research support for the Curatorial team. This person will assist the curatorial team with clerical and research tasks related to: acquisitions and loans, collections records, research for exhibitions and publications, general curatorial inquiries. Qualifications include: Minimum of a bachelor's degree, preferably in music or a music-related field. Prior work in professional and office environments. Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet and other computer programs, including Microsoft Office suite and databases. Experience working with photo files and other media. Experience with online searching and research. Museum or library experience is desirable. Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
