3. Buddhist iconography in Thailand : a South-east Asian perspective / A.K. Bhattacharyya. -- Kolkata : Punthi Pustak, 2007.

xvi, 163 p. : ill., folded map ; 29 cm.

ISBN 818679171X

EUR 73.20  USD 106.95 DK-179282

The unique feature of Buddhist iconography of Thailand is owing to the primary concern of Buddhism in that country with adoration of the personal image of the Buddha. This book lays bare the innovativeness and expertise of Thai artists who through their iconic art produced a unique manifestation of Buddhist art touching upon the personality of the Great Master, which has been unequalled by any other art form.

The work covers the course of Buddhist art history in Thailand which has seen overlappings and overflowings of traits and styles. Viewing the Buddhist texts and the many Sanskrit or Pali-based terms assimilated by the Thai tradition, it explores the Thai Buddhist iconography for its symmetry, beauty and dynamic quality while also consulting prescriptions in the Buddhist texts for iconic presentations of the Buddha. With copious illustrations, it captures the iconographic representations of the Lord Buddha in various poses, mudras, jewellery, head-dress and in various art styles—Late Chiang Saen style (sixteenth century AD), Sihing (Sri Lanka) style, Eastern Indian (Pala) style and so on. It studies the Thai iconography as it flourished among the Mon clan which formed the bulk of the glorious Dvaravati kingdom  of the seventh century AD. It studies the sculptures of the Srivijaya kingdom which possess a unique delicate bearing and have great indigenous content. It examines the assimilation of the traits of Khmer in the east, central and some parts of the north and the south from sixth to thirteenth century AD. It views the sculptural art of the kingdom of Lan na with its unparalleled fineness, style of the Sukhothai area (fourteenth-fifteenth centuries), the Ayutthaya art style (mid-fourteenth to mid-eighteenth centuries) and the art styles of the Rattanakosin period (1768-modern period).

The book will enthrall lovers of Asian art, particularly Buddhist art of South-east Asia.

The volumes examine various aspects of the Indian heritage of coins of different historical periods, dynasties and rulers. They comprise a detailed study of the art of numismatics referring to a vast time span--from the   early

historical periods to about AD 1835, especially the early and medieval periods. They feature some coins of the fifth century AD, coins of the early indigenous rulers and non-indigenous rulers like the Greek and Saka kings, coins of the Gupta empire, the post-Gupta period coins, coins of peninsular India from the fourth to the thirteenth centuries, coins of the Sultanate kings and the Vijayanagar kings of the Deccan, and art on the coins of the Mughals and their contemporaries. The work examines aspects of the coins like the symbols on punch-marked coins, their types and purposes, and interpretations of them. Taking up the coins of South India of the early centuries AD, it deals with their material, symbols and art motifs and their similarities with Roman and other coins. It also takes up the art of Islamic calligraphy on medieval coins of Muslim kingdoms. While the first volume discusses the features of the coins and their many attributes, the second volume is an entire album of the coins, featuring photographic reproductions of some 322 coins. The photographs show the depictions on their obverse and reverse sides. Each photograph has a caption. The coins are well classified into different historical periods and clearly assigned to kings and dynasties where they belonged. Throughout, the research refers to scholarly works by noted historians like John Marshall, A. S. Atlekar, A. Cunningham and R. B. Whitehead to present a well-researched study of Indian numismatics.

The volumes will interest archaeologists and historians who are concerned with the numismatic heritage of India.
