For the person who’d asked about alternative conference formats,
other than powerpoint lectures:
The local Chamber of Commerce advertised an event this week that
was organized as follows. I didn’t see how it went, but it might be interesting
to modify and try. I think somebody on this list suggested something similar. This
one, however, was held at a Pub & Grille!

After-Hours Networking---Technology Exchange
Thursday,
May 22, 5-6:30 p.m.
The
structured format of this event is conducive to making connections! Everyone has the
opportunity to choose a group: social networking, blogging, podcasting, web
strategy, hosted applications etc. For 20 minutes, that group of 5-8 people
will discuss the topic, moderated by a chamber "expert" on the issue.
After the time is up, everyone chooses whether he/she wants to switch groups or
stay where there and continue the conversation. There will be three, 20-minute
periods.
Everyone will learn from the others in the group as well as the moderator. Some
people will bond because of their lack of knowledge while others will connect
because they are going through the same challenges. Some discussions may even
result in meetings after the event itself, to discuss the topics further.
