We hire 5 interns each summer and put them on the payroll as hourly, 
seasonal employees. This means that we do pay the payroll taxes but they 
are not eligible for any benefits that we offer to salaried staff.
They do not sign contracts but we do have a midterm evaluation and exit 
evaluation/interview and check in to see that it is indeed a learning 
experience for them, that their department head is not just having them 
make photocopies and get coffee.
