Hi Andrew As someone who graduated, in January 2007, from the University of Leicester distance learning programme, I can't recommend it enough. Leicester is one of the leading institutions for distance Museum Studies, and you really can't go wrong with it. There were many foreign students studying at the same time as me, and they got outstanding support, and other than having to send coursework in earlier (to account for postage) I don't think that they really found any different to those of us who were based in the UK. The lecturers and admin staff at Leicester are exceptional, and make the whole process of studying with them so easy. The lecturers at Leicester are at the forefront of their fields. Because Leicester has such a good reputation, there certainly is no stigma (in the UK at least) for having acquired a degree via distance learning. I actually think that it shows greater commitment on the students part, by studying and working (in whatever form) at the same time. I admit that I didn't enjoy it as much as when I studied the first time at Uni, but then my halls of residence were right next to the students union!!! The content is interesting and Leicester holds annual summer schools based on various topics, which students from all over the world attend. Please don't be put off from studying via the distance learning route. It is hard going, but well worth it. And if you choose the right institution, a distance degree is just as good as a residential degree. I'm aware of the programs at the University of Leicester and the University of Oklahoma and have read through the information on their websites. Could someone comment on the reputation and quality of either of those programs? Are there other reputable programs I should consider? 2. Since I'm not planning on relocating to the UK anytime soon, is there a preference at institutions in the United States for a degree earned in the United States? Does it matter? 3. Is there any stigma associated with distance learning? I'm imagining those commercials that advertised courses in gun smithing and plumbing via U.S. Mail. 4. Does anyone feel that distance learning (even with the bells and whistles of modern communication) is less of an experience than on-campus learning? Someone once mentioned that contact with other graduate students in your program is important. Is it important to be in the same room? 5. Are there any other guiding principles you would suggest? Feel free to contact me off list if you like and thank you in advance for your help. Andrew H.
