Rebecca,
We use the Getty’s Art and Architecture Thesaurus when
Chenhall’s doesn’t have an object name listed. And then we
add it to both the book – marking the date of addition with the initial
of the person who added it – as well as adding it in the appropriate hierarchical
location on Past Perfect.
According to their lexicon – they would use, “Miniature
(toys)” for miniatures and collectables that are not precise scale
models.
The Hierarchy can be seen here: http://www.getty.edu/vow/AATFullDisplay?find=model&logic=AND¬e=&page=1&subjectid=300266033

Subject: Re: [MUSEUM-L] Model Ship Nomrnclature
Hi Rebecca,
We use Chenhall’s Nomenclature and were not able to find a
good term to describe ship models. So we added the term “Model,
Ship” to the subcategory “Documentary Artifact.” In
reality, some of our ship models were created as documentary artifacts, some as
works of art, so it might be equally appropriate to categorize them as art.
Either way, we use the term to describe both scratch-built scale models and
models made from kits.
When we’ve had to add our own new terms to Nomenclature I
always make sure to add them both in the database authority list AND in the
hard copy book.
Hope this helps.

Mario and All:
Thanks for your speedy reply. I did check those sites,
but did not find what I was looking for. I think I need to explain this
further. I am looking for the nomenclature for minature, but to scale
models of ships like the "Mayflower" or the
"Titanic". This items could fit on a shelf in your home,
or on your desk. The ones I am cataloging are made without the benefit of
a kit, therefore art probably listed as Communication Artifacts with a sub
category of art. The revised nomenclature reference that I am using is
quite old. The book lists ship in a bottle, but not one of equal scale
outside a bottle.
Sincerely,
Rebecca Fitzgerald
