POSITION OPENING: Director of Public Programs & Outreach

The Touro Synagogue Foundation is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit, nonsectarian organization in Newport, Rhode Island dedicated to maintaining and preserving Touro Synagogue, the Levi Gale House, Patriots Park and the Colonial Jewish Cemetery, and to promoting the cause of religious freedom in America.  The TSF along with its partners has an on-going capital project to conserve and expand the role of Touro Synagogue through a comprehensive historic preservation project, the development of a visitors center with exhibit space and educational programs.

PRINCIPAL FUNCTION OF THE POSITION

The Director of Public Programs & Outreach reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for the day to day operation of all public programs and outreach efforts of the Touro Synagogue Foundation.  The Director oversees the operation of all visitor programs, educational programs, marketing, public relations, outreach efforts, the Foundation's membership program, and support for the Foundation's development efforts.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Visitors Programs

 1.  Hires, trains, supervises and schedules staff who provide lectures for visitors program and service in the Foundation's Gift Shop.
 2.  Coordinates the selection of appropriate offerings for the Foundation's Gift Shop.
 3.  Sets regular operating hours for the public visitors program in conjunction with the Executive Director.
 4.  Serves as a tour guide or gift shop staff as needed.
 5.  Coordinates schedule for use of Touro Synagogue with appropriate staff of Congregation Jeshuat Israel.
 6.  Schedules special tours for visitors as requested.
 7.  Promotes the availability of educational programs to Rhode Island schools.
 8.  Provides monthly reports of visitation, programs and activities.
 9.  Conducts quarterly reviews of visitors programs and recommends changes to Executive Director.

Educational & Recognition Programs

 1.  Works with appropriate staff, volunteers and partner organizations at Touro Synagogue Foundation to develop a regular series of public programs and awards at the Synagogue and other locations around Rhode Island.
 2.  Develops and maintains a series of age appropriate curricula for school based programs and school visits to Touro Synagogue.

Marketing, Promotion, Public Relations and Outreach

 1.  Develops and implements a strategy to promote all of the offerings of Touro Synagogue Foundation in coordination with the Executive Director.
 2.  Produces two Touro Update reports each year, in March and September.
 3.  Manages the Foundation's website: www.tourosynagogue.org<http://www.tourosynagogue.org/>.
 4.  Promotes all special programs with appropriate publicity and invitations.
 5.  Provides regular updates to Rhode Island publications and tourism organizations about regular and special offerings of the Foundation.

Membership & Development

 1.  Manages the Foundation's donor and membership database.
 2.  Coordinates monthly membership renewal mailing program.
 3.  Develops and distributes membership and annual fund appeals.
 4.  Produces mailing lists as needed.
 5.  Manages and implement's the Foundation's donor appreciation program.

SUPERVISES: Coordinator, Public Programs & Outreach

HOURS OF WORK

The Director of Public Programs and Outreach is an exempt employee and is expected to work as needed to complete assigned duties.  The Director's regular work schedule would be Monday through Friday, 9 am to 5 pm, though flexibility for evening and weekend programs and meetings is required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates for the position should have completed a Bachelor's degree and have a minimum of 10 years of experience working with the public and 5 years of supervisory experience.
