Curator of Exhibitions

The Danish Immigrant Museum

Elk Horn, Iowa, USA

 

We have an immediate opening for a newly created supervisory position of
Curator of Exhibitions.  The individual will join a staff of nine full-time
employees, will report to the Executive Director and work with the
Collections Manager/Registrar.

 

The Danish Immigrant Museum was chartered as a non-profit organization in
1983.  The exhibits and collection of over 35,000 artifacts are preserved
and displayed in a 16,000-square-foot building, constructed in 1994 and
situated on 30 acres of rolling prairie.  The museum also operates a Family
History and Genealogy Center located on the main street of Elk Horn.  Over
3,000 members provide annual support, and governance is provided by a 25
member Board of Directors with representation from across the United States
and Denmark.

 

Job Description: The Curator of Exhibitions will design, fabricate and
coordinate exhibitions for display at the museum, for travel and on the
website.  This person will function as a researcher and historian becoming
knowledgeable in the history and culture of the Danish American experience
as well as relations between Denmark and the United States. In addition to
planning, initiating and managing exhibits, the individual will give public
presentations, provide assistance for research projects, work with the
Collections Manager/Registrar to assure artifact preservation and collection
management, and assist in general administrative tasks.

 

Qualifications:

 

*         Bachelor's degree or above in one or more of the following
disciplines required: humanities, social sciences, museum arts, education,
or related subject;

*         Advanced degree in museum studies is preferred;

*         Knowledge of history, particularly immigrant history, with some
knowledge of Scandinavian and/or Danish history preferred;

*         Experience in on-line and virtual exhibits is highly desired;

*         Excellent writing, organizational, interpersonal and team building
skills are essential;

*         Bilingual abilities involving Danish or one of the Scandinavian
languages are desired, but not required;

*         Strong computer skills required for research and administrative
skills and experience in PastPerfect is helpful.

 

Salary:  Starting salary commensurate with qualifications and experience
(range of $27,500 to $32,500)
