GENERAL PURPOSE:
Responsible for the implementation of exhibit concepts, including planning, designing, fabricating, installing and maintaining exhibits.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge, skills and abilities:
• The ability to organize and manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
• The ability to use carpentry and shop tools, as well as fabrication materials.
• The ability to learn, follow, apply and relay government guidelines, policies, rules and regulations when dealing with citizens and fellow employees.
• A working knowledge of basic mathematics, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.
• The knowledge and ability to operate a variety of standard office machinery.
• The knowledge of exhibit design materials, construction and installation techniques, including Museum lighting systems.

Education and/or formal training:
B.A. in Museum Studies, History, Art History, Fine Arts or related field required.

Experience:
Two (2) years museum or gallery experience as a preparator, or comparable experience required. Experience in handling historical artifacts and fine art. Experience operating a forklift desirable.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Works as a team with the staff, as well as independently, to develop art and historical exhibit concepts and objectives, exhibit design and long-range planning.
2. Installs changing art and history exhibits; performs needed maintenance and modifications on all exhibits; prepares exhibit areas with paint, temporary walls, and lighting.
3. Prepares cost estimates, draws up exhibit designs, selects appropriate materials and fabricates in-house exhibits including crates, pedestals and walls.
4. Oversees the shop area which includes inventorying and purchasing supplies and maintaining the shop, tools and equipment.
5. Coordinates with Curators to schedule pick-up and delivery of incoming and outgoing exhibits; prepares condition reports; visually documents exhibits.
6. Handles works of art and historical objects, which includes mount making, matting and framing, moving and installing fragile and heavy objects. Must be able to unload and arrange for pick up of incoming and outgoing exhibits.
7. Prepares, coordinates and installs interior and exterior signage and graphics.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
1. Reviews professional publications and keeps abreast of developments in the museum field.
2. Obtains and prepares cost estimates for construction of exhibits, equipment, and supplies for inclusion in the annual budget.
