Diane,
There are excellent and low-cost computer software personnel policies that inform you of applicabe laws related to your situation and which give you a choice of options. I have used them in the past and swear by them. In my daughter's case she received 6 month's leave of absence from her company and her husband received two weeks. Obviously it is much more important for a mother to receive more leave so as to feed the baby and recover from the pregnancy and birth, as well as, the first few months of sleep deprivation. I would hope that your museum would be family friendly, and that within the framework of economic reality be as supportive of a young family as possible. Peace, Nick

I'm still hoping someone will be willing to share what their policy says whether it's for a man or woman. I'm sorry I stirred everyone up with my question, but evidently it sounds like this is an issue that many museums need to address and not just the political aspects of it. While I appreciate the debate I'm still hoping someone out there has some useful advice.

I thought this was dead.  Cant these emails be taken off line??  Both lines of attack are way beyond tiresome at this point.

Randy -

Do you even work at a museum? You smell a bit trolly to me, to be honest. This
is a list for members of the museum community, not hostile mens' rights
activists.

That said, I'll bite.

Your email seems to be one big hateful rant after another.  You obviously are
anti-woman and anti-parent.  You think everyone but you should be punished for
their personal choices or health situations.  I note that you "almost" got
fired for taking breaks, and yet - you did not.  How does this qualify as
discrimination?  Clearly you were passively-aggressively calling attention to
your smoking colleagues' abuse of the break system.  This does not make you a
hero, nor does it make you a victim.

If employers want to keep quality employees, they do what they can to meet
their needs.  That might be on-site daycare, free smoking cessation programs,
gym memberships, parental leave, or performance bonuses.  If our government
was TRULY family-friendly, paid parental leave would be bog-standard, simply
part of the cost of doing business, like paying unemployment, taking out
social security, and (hopefully) providing health insurance.

It is absolutely inappropriate to launch a personal attack on a woman on this
list and call her irresponsible for having a baby.  This is misogyny, full
stop.  You owe Ms. Hignite an apology.
