Position Summary
The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum (TSHM) is a
division of the State Preservation Board, the caretakers of the Capitol.
TSHM is a dynamic non-collecting educational institution that engages its
visitors in the exciting Story of Texas through a variety of programs and
exhibit experiences. The Exhibit Technician reports to the Museum's Head of Exhibits
and works responsive to daily guidance provided by the team leader(s.) This position performs fine
carpentry, complex construction, painting, installation, de-installation and
general maintenance of Museum exhibits and related structures, fixtures and/or
objects. Works as part of an interdisciplinary team, including graphic
designer, registrar, content specialists, historical subject matter experts and
other Museum professionals to achieve aesthetic and educational exhibits for
diverse audiences. Works collaboratively with all TSHM divisions and interacts
with the general public in a manner that promotes public confidence in the
Museum and its staff. Performs all other duties as assigned, including
transporting and/or placement of exhibit components. Work hours are based on
the Museum's 360 day-per-year schedule and will include weekends, evenings
and/or holidays, including on short notice.
Essential Functions

Works
effectively as part of a team of Exhibits Technician's to maintain
all permanent and temporary exhibit components; including exhibit cases, walls,
case furniture, audio visual (A/V) media units, exhibit theaters, exhibit
lighting, and other required elements.

Successfully demonstrates
proficiency with museum exhibit installation and artifact handling techniques
and equipment. Uses safe and conservational approved methods.
·
Effectively and safely performs construction, adjustment,
monitoring, finishing and installation of Museum exhibit structures, fixtures and
lighting. Fabricates, constructs, de-installs and builds exhibits using proper
tools, equipment, materials, techniques and methods to perform installations,
de-installations, repairs and general exhibit structural maintenance.
Interprets sketches and plans.

Performs a wide range of
specialized manual craftwork and physical labor, including carpentry and
woodwork. Safely uses power and handheld tools. Performs installation and
de-installation of lighting fixtures and effects, varnishing, painting,
artifact mountmaking, creating special effects and other skilled and/or
creative craftwork.

Demonstrates excellent eye-hand
coordination and manual dexterity; and is able to repetitively reach, climb, safely
lift up to 50 pounds. Is able to transport materials, organize and clean work
areas, kneel, stretch, stoop, bend and perform other duties requiring
considerable manual and physical exertion.

Assembles, installs, arranges and
organizes exhibits, fixtures, graphics, sound and lighting equipment, wiring,
control equipment and other materials, objects and/or items, working according
to design specifications.

Orders, organizes, maintains and
secures all equipment and tools required to perform the assigned duties. Determines
costs of materials as part of planning work and assigned duties. Maintains
equipment and tool inventories and/or performs inventory duties.

Uses a personal computer in a
Windows-based environment according to agency policy and department procedures
to perform various administrative tasks including e-mail, materials and
supplies research and/or inventory control and performing other duties as
assigned. Keeps well-organized computer and hardcopy records of material
expended on specific assignments.

Ensures that the Head of Exhibits
is informed of all significant developments and potential issues in advance of
targeted milestones. Uses effective project management techniques and methods
to accomplish work outcomes, including planning, scheduling, monitoring
milestones, costs, materials, equipment and overall progress.

Performs walk-through and visual
inspections of exhibits to identify needed repairs and general maintenance
requirements. Communicates and coordinates all work and projects with the
Exhibits Team Leader. Plans and performs all repairs and general maintenance as
required. May assist the Team Leader in cross-training other Exhibits staff.

The individual hired for this
position may be designated according to specialty, including lighting,
carpentry, woodworking, audio-visual, artifact mountmaking, or other functional
areas based on business necessity.
Minimum Qualifications
The
successful candidate for this position must have three (3) years experience in
museum exhibits as either a fabricator, carpenter, preparator or exhibit
technician. College graduate in studio art, architecture, graphic
communications, commercial design, or a related field is preferred although
additional related experience may be considered as a substitute for the education
requirement. Applicant's background must reflect fine woodworking
skills with all carpentry power and hand tools. The position
requires the ability to work conceptually, physically and skillfully within
designated timelines to create aesthetically pleasing and structurally sound
displays. Safely lifts and/or transports up to 50 pounds; demonstrates
broad knowledge of museum fabrication processes, techniques, materials,
supplies and equipment. Applicant's background must include
use of a personal computer in a Windows-based environment. This position is not
sedentary in nature and requires regular evening, night and/or weekend or holiday
work, including on short notice.
Preferred
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess additional areas
of specialization as identified under the minimum qualifications and a minimum
of five (5) years related experience. Experience with faux painting and
drawing or sketching of design concepts, artifact mount construction, carpentry
certification, audio-visual equipment maintenance will be favorably considered.
