As a science teacher with 10 years of museum exhibition experience, accessibility is an issue for us even without socio economics involved. Our internet is unreliable in our classrooms. There are filters to protect the children in place and they block so many things, it's hard to get pages to load. Plus, I only have one computer and it's on my desk. I would love to use videos posted online or have my students check out info online. A lot of materials I've seen from museums or government agency websites have beautiful materials to download and print out but we don't have color printers or color xerox machines so they lose a lot of their "wow" factor. Sorry just thinking out loud, Lisa --- NYSED NATURECACHE <[log in to unmask]> wrote: > This might be a good time to bring up an > observation. > > I'm seeing more and more educational video online... > which is great. > > But how do we handle accessibility? > > So, here's the scenario... > -We all now have seen this great video that Beryl > Rosenthal alerted us to. > -We tell our teacher-friends > -One of them assigns watching the online video as > "homework" > -A student from lower socioeconomic background goes > to the library to use the computer to watch the > video homework assignment > -The library has disabled the audio on all its > computers (I think ALL libraries disable the audio!) > > Try it yourself. > Watch the video with the sound off. > Without sound, Beryl's "brilliant" assessment is > probably not your first impression. > Think about what the the youth in the scenario gets > out of the video. > > The video doesn't comply with accessibility > standards for inclusion of diverse audiences. > > So, how do we handle online video? > Subtitles? > Transcripts? > > New technologies explode onto the market. > We need to be prepared with standards to use them > effectively. > > [log in to unmask] > http://www.NatureCache.org > > > <-----Original Message-----> > >From: Beryl Rosenthal [[log in to unmask]] > >Sent: 12/20/2007 12:53:17 PM > >To: [log in to unmask] > >Subject: Re: science educator in the news > > > >Walter became a friend during my tenure at the MIT > Museum.
