We’ve begun to offer quarterly “tutorials” at board meetings.  Some are 10-minute presentations by various staff members … e.g., an introduction to our large photo collection and how/why folks can purchase photos; a walk-through in collections storage with brief explanations of how/why we use certain storage materials.  Others are simply a one-page “tutorial” on a single topic which we verbally review at the board meeting … e.g., an overview of staff (basic info such as salaries and the chain of command and a list of current staff members and their qualifications), a review of budget and line items.  I’ve found that even long-term board members appreciate these reminders or updates.

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] New Board Member Training

Hi all!

We are getting ready to "train" our three new board members to our museum. Since I have come on as director, several already existing board members have said that they wished they had more information before they began work. One even suggested a board mentor type program. My question is this....what do the rest of you all do to induct your new board members as to the nuts and bolts of your organization beyond giving them a copy of your bylaws. How do you get them to understand the down and dirty of your operation in a quick and timely manner? What worked and what hasn't?

Diane
