Try a web search using the terms
non profit board training

you will have several hits including this one
It is a free online (can be printed) very extensive "toolkit" for board members
You can of course adapt it to your specific needs

See if your local United Way offers such training

Develop a guide called Board members Ways of Work or something similar
Give the nitty gritty of meeting arrangements,
"forms" and report examples, calendar,

Provide or loan copies of Robert's Rules of Order or whatever rules your by-laws call for

Link with other local non-profits and observe each other's meetings if allowed
or find what guides/training they offer

Recruit a role model retired board member to help "train"

Be sure they understand the nominating committee duties and/or what ever group is the one who recruits new board members - that group will ensure success-failure for future boards.

Ask your professional connections for help --- meet with your auditor, lawyer, banker etc.
They might offer to speak to your board or to individuals for free if you are careful to adjust to their busy calendars. Don't ask the auditor on April 14th for example!

Provide a 3 ring binder or other "official" folder-packet to organize their board "life" and papers!
A meeting calendar, board member address-calling list, the by-laws, and other standard papers they will need. -- a place to keep minutes and reports.

Schedule on-going training for "old" board members too. -- Short sessions attached to a regular board meetings touching on specific topics.

For self-protection !  be sure they know their roles and the role of staff.
Include other staff occasionally

A misc collection of thoughts!!!  Hope it helps.

Best wishes, Barbara Hass, retired librarian and former non-profit CEO
