Cindy, check with the San Bernardino County Museum (CA). Talk to Michelle Nielsen (Curator of History) or Robert McKernan (Museum Director). They have six historic sites with live-in site managers. In addition to the rent and utilities, they get a small stipend. They are responsible for basic site maintenance and cleaning, security and providing tours.

Subject: Do you have a caretaker at your site?

We have had live-in caretakers at our two historic house museums for years.  They receive free rent and utilities in exchange for some basic cleaning responsibilities, with their primary value seen as a presence living onsite, keeping each house secure.

We are about to lose a caretaker, and it’s a chance to revisit the position.,  We are re-thinking what responsibilities are appropriate to expect in exchange for living quarters, heat, light, and local phone service.

Do you have a caretaker – or know of a caretaker situation?  What is your trade of responsibilities for living space or a stipend.  Do you require a cash deposit from your caretaker, or utilities payment?

Feel free to respond directly to my email, if you think its too specific for the list..

Thank you.
