This course follows from HA 486A <http://www.uvcs.uvic.ca/crmp/courses/ha486a-oncampus.aspx> Museum Principles and Practices I: Communities, Curatorship and Collections <http://www.uvcs.uvic.ca/crmp/courses/ha486a-oncampus.aspx> , to focus on the ways in which museums present a diverse range of exhibitions, programs and other outreach activities to meet their educational mandate, and then goes on to explore the governance and management structures needed to ensure that the museum meets its mission and goals. Through a range of activities, readings and assignments, you explore current issues in programming, exhibitions, governance and management and enhance your ability to: * appreciate the past, present and future contexts and frameworks for museum practice * engage in current debates around the role and purpose of museums in service to society and communities * understand the functional areas of museum work, their processes and their interrelationship within the museum as a complex organization * forge crucial links between philosophical foundations and professional practice * strengthen your professional network Instructor: Shirley Madill is the Director/CEO of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria <http://www.aggv.bc.ca> . Previously she served as the Vice President and Chief Operations Officer as well as the Chief Curator/Director of Programming of the Art Gallery of Hamilton. She has organized and curated dozens of national and international exhibitions. Shirley is an active member of the museum and gallery professional community and has published and presented at panels and conferences extensively. She has taught at the University of Manitoba, the University of Winnipeg and Brock University.
