COLLECTIONS MOVE ASSISTANTS

 

The Williamstown Art Conservation Center seeks personnel with museum
experience to assist in a Collections Move in Louisiana, over a
six-month period beginning in December 2007 or January 2008. These are
temporary, full-time positions under contract to WACC, working on-site
in New Orleans and Baton Rouge for the Louisiana State Museum.  

 

General Description: 

The Move Assistants will participate in the relocation of Louisiana
State Museum Collections from Baton Rouge to New Orleans.  These
collections were evacuated from New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina,
and are now to be moved back into the newly renovated museum in the
historic French Quarter.   Collections include jazz instruments,
recordings and memorabilia from the Jazz Collection, archives, library
materials and works on paper from the Louisiana History Center, and
decorative arts and science/technology artifacts from the Department of
Material Culture.  

 

Three to five Move Assistants with museum experience are needed to
inventory, photograph, clean, and rehouse these objects, pack them for
transport, and unpack them after arrival. Museum registration, art
handling and packing, and introductory conservation skills are desired.
The move team will work under the direction of a Move Coordinator, and
in concert with LSM curators and staff.

 

Duties include:

- Working with appropriate LSM staff to inventory, register, and track
collections as they are moved out of Baton Rouge and into the museum in
New Orleans.

- Examination, light cleaning, relabeling and rehousing as needed, and
safe repacking with appropriate materials to prepare collections for
reshipping to Old U.S. Mint Building in New Orleans.

- Unpacking and reinstallation of collections in newly upgraded storage
spaces.

 

Qualific ations:

-BA in art history, museum studies, or related fields.

-1 year experience in museum registration and/or collections care.

-Familiarity with museum database systems, especially TMS.

-Art handling, packing, and mountmaking.

-Basic conservation skills.

 

Salary: $1153.85 bi-weekly for 24 weeks..
