Date: 10/2007 Education Program Coordinator - Museum of the African Diaspora (SOMA / south beach) Reply to: [log in to unmask] POSITION PURPOSE: The Education Program Coordinator is responsible for the coordination of the Heritage Center, Museum Guide program, family program, community outreach, and other education activities which augment exhibitions. The coordinator supervises volunteers. Together with the Curator Public Programs/Online Content Manager develops and implements specific programs as well as educational resources for targeted audiences; also coordinates the training programs for MoAD Guides and scheduling of group tours. The Education Program Coordinator reports to the Director of Education. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: • Coordinating and scheduling the volunteers that supervise the Heritage Center during public hours; orienting volunteers to educational resources including books, videos, and on the computers; coordinating the development of bibliographies for specific exhibitions with the San Francisco Public Library; • Scheduling of all group tours; making arrangements with teachers, professors, and group leaders for visits to the museum with students; scheduling MoAD Guides with the MoAD Guide Council; scheduling tour trainings and outings for MoAD Guides; coordinating the recruitment of MoAD Guides with the Volunteer Program Manager and the MoAD Guide Council; coordinating with Visitor Services and Admission staff for efficient and friendly group arrival/departures; maintaining the internal group tour schedule and distribution of weekly group tour schedule; • Coordinating intergenerational events for families in conjunction with exhibitions; arranging art activities, performances, demonstrations by artists and presenters; processing invoices related to honorariums and supplies; coordinating the recruitment of volunteers with the Volunteer Program Manager and partnering organization staff; responsible for the logistics of events including coordinating the set-up/breakdown of all equipment with Facilities and Security staff that support events; coordinating the needs of presenters with appropriate exhibitions and visitor services staff; • Assist with planning and implementation of public programs for adults. Lectures, workshops, seminars, symposia, related activities and other public events in collaboration with outside groups. • Coordinating specific audience development partnerships with local organizations including representing the education programs at local and regional education groups, teacher groups; • Coordinating the arrangement of resources in the museum galleries that support exhibitions; • Other duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education and Training: Advanced degree preferred in art history with an emphasis on African American or African modern and contemporary art, or performing arts, or museum studies, or art education or California teaching credential. Work Experience: Two years experience in museum education, or community arts which includes previous teaching experience. Skills and Abilities: Demonstrated knowledge of African American or African modern and contemporary art. Excellent written communication and public speaking skills. Excellent interpersonal communication. Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize in a fast-paced environment. Must be self motivated. Demonstrated creativity and innovation in developing and leading educational programs. Ability to work effectively in a team. Sense of humor. WORKING CONDITIONS: Physical Demands: Light lifting; frequent use of stairs. Special Environmental Factors: Close office setting.
