Applications are invited for the position of Hocken
Librarian, Hocken Collections, at the University of Otago.
The University of Otago was established in 1869 and
is New Zealand’s oldest university. It has an international reputation for
excellence in education and research. Its mission is to advance, preserve and
promote knowledge, critical thinking and intellectual independence to enhance
the understanding, development and well-being of individuals and
society.
The Hocken Librarian leads and manages the
iconic Hocken Collections, with specific responsibility for the Hocken research
heritage collections and services. The Hocken
collects books, ephemera, posters, newspapers, journals,
music, maps, archives, manuscripts, photographs, paintings, drawings and film
relating to the history and culture of New Zealand, the Pacific and Antarctica.
The collection is available to both the public and the University, providing an
important national reference service.
The University is seeking an exceptional individual
who will: develop and facilitate strategic plans; ensure best practice in all
areas of the Hocken and its operations; and, maintain and manage the Hocken
Collections. In addition, the appointee will be required to enhance and promote
the Collections’ reputation.
The successful applicant will have appropriate
professional qualifications and a research degree. An understanding and interest in New Zealand’s history and
cultural diversity is also important.
The Hocken Librarian is accountable to the
University Librarian. The appointee will also be a member of the University
Library’s executive management group and involved in strategic planning for the
wider University Library.
