Hi all,

This looks like a great conference, Ann. I must say that we in
California State Parks, and here at the State Capitol in particular,
have seen an INCREASE in classes visiting. Teachers seem to use museums
and historic sites as a substitute for classroom instruction. What has
changed is the degree of preparation the students receive before their
visit. Currently many classes, mostly 4th and 5th grade, come in with
little or no prep work by the teachers in California history or
legislative process. Often teachers will tell us that they are so
pressed to teach to the tests and have so much compulsory Math and
Language Arts that there is no time for anything else. Occasionally,
very overwhelmed teachers will arrive seeming to expect us to teach
their entire history and government curricula in the 1 hour we have with
the students!

Subject: [MUSEUM-L] No Museum Left Behind

In March 2008, the Midwest chapter of EdCom will host a conference in
Chicago entitled "No Museum Left Behind." With the passing of the No
Child Left Behind (NCLB)legislation in 2001, schools have often
struggled to meet the new needs of both teachers and students. This
enormous change in education policy has had a ripple effect on museums
from decreased school visits to the altering of program content. With
the inevitable reauthorization of NCLB later this year by Congress, how
has your museum adapted and changed to meet these new needs?

We are seeking proposals for this conference. Please email Nathan
Richie, EdCom Midwest Chair ([log in to unmask]), the presentation
title, presenter(s), title of presenter(s), contact information, AV
needs, description of presentation (no more than 50 words) and the
presentation's goals by Friday, November 2, 2007.
