Conservation Fellow - Bone Stabilization Position
Position: Conservation Fellow, Anthropology Division, Museum of
Texas Tech University
Accountability: This position reports to the Collections Manager -
Anthropology
Description: The Conservation Fellow position is an entry
level, professional, 3-year grant-funded position that is responsible for
the daily operations of the Conservation lab for the Anthropology
Division of the Museum of Texas Tech University. This position
focuses on bone stabilization and involves working in all phases of the
preservation effort from the field through installation in the
Collections Room; following documentation protocol; database management;
supervising students working in the lab; drafting lab policies and
procedures and writing status reports; prioritizing lab activities;
maintenance of lab equipment; interaction and cooperation with the
division staff; and all other duties as assigned by the Collections
Manager or the Curator of Anthropology.
Salary is $25,000/year plus full University benefits. Earliest start date
September 2007; position open until filled.
Duties and Responsibilities (including supervisory):
§ Assess all incoming bone as well as that already in the
division’s collections;
§ Document unstable bone and develop a treatment plan for
curator’s approval;
§ Implement approved treatment plans;
§ Photodocumentation and entering data and photography into a
computer;
§ Supervise laboratory students.
§ Work with students of various experience levels, as well as
interact with field crew personnel
Physical Requirements
This position requires a moderate level of physical activity. The
employee must physically be able to:
§ Lift and carry a minimum of 25 pounds;
§ Use chemicals needed to stabilize and conserve objects.
Qualifications:
§ Must have a working knowledge of and experience working with
thermoplastic reversible resins/solutions;
§ Must have a working knowledge of and experience working with
unstable bone.
§ Must be computer literate;
§ Must be able to organize collections data and people; and budget
time, personnel, supplies, and equipment to complete assignments in a
timely fashion;
§ Ability to work well with others;
§ Ability to do precise work;
§ Strong work ethic and self-starter.
Minimum Acceptable Training and Experience
§
Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s preferred: conservations
sciences, museum science/studies, anthropology, or related fields.
§ Two years experience in conservation, with experience working
with bone stabilization, including working with polyvinyl acetate (PVAC)
and acryosol.
