I'm posting this question for an academic colleague, who has been asked to serve as a guest curator on part of a proposed museum exhibition. He is negotiating a contract now and discussing intellectual property rights. Another guest curator has suggested that because the exhibit will be touring to other museums after its first run, the curators should receive a fee or royalty for each venue.

 

He consulted me for information - but I've never heard of such an arrangement. In my experience, an exhibit developer might be paid more upfront because of the complexities of a travelling exhibit as opposed to a single venue - but not be paid per venue.

 

Is anyone familiar with this sort of arrangement, and where can he get information about guest curator policies and practices?
