Graduate degree in a subject
matter related to American fine and decorative arts or a related field. Knowledge
of Colonial American history is a plus.

Ten years of professional
experience in a museum, historic site, or similar institution.

Solid experience in managing a
large staff.

Strong knowledge of the management
and care of collections and other current museum practices.
Librarian
The Librarian is charged
with a significant role in the planning of the proposed Study for the Center of
George Washington, expanding use of MVLA resources, and developing new ways of
using the collections and information about the Washington family and Mount
Vernon, as well as making the information easily accessible worldwide.
The Librarian will enhance the reference and special collections through gifts,
purchases, and loans and in researching, caring for, and effectively using the special
collections – including the Association’s institutional records
– in interpretive programs both on and off the estate. The Librarian cultivates
potential donors and lenders, establishes strategic alliances with partners,
and effectively manages the Library/Archives resources, including staff, space,
time, money, equipment, and technology. The Librarian has primary
responsibility for the Gilder Lehrman Gallery and supervises the work of
Library/Archives staff.

requirements:

Graduate degree in Library Science
and Information Management.

Knowledge of 18th-century
American history highly preferred.

Expertise in historic manuscripts,
maps, period newspapers and rare books.

At least five years professional experience
in a special collections library or museum working at a senior level.

Experience in the organization and
sharing of information via new technologies. Knowledge of the latest
electronic outreach tools.

Knowledge of current conservation,
collections care, and other museum/library/archives practices.
