Hedy Epstein

Hedy Epstein, a Holocaust survivor, will speak on Friday, September 28.  Born in Germany, Epstein bore witness to the escalation of Nazi aggression. After unsuccessfully trying to move the family from Germany, Eptein’s parents sent her to England in 1939 on a children's transport to save her life. Five hundred children were on this transport, part of the almost 10,000 children that England took in at the beginning of World War II.  Epstein’s parents and family were deported in 1940 to a concentration camp in France.  The last communication Epstein received from her mother was a postcard dated September 4, 1942. The postcard read, "Traveling to the east ... Sending you a final goodbye." Her parents and extended family were later deported to the concentration camp, Auschwitz.  Epstein never saw her family again.

After the war, Epstein returned to Germany and worked for the U.S. government and later worked at the Nuremberg Medical Trial to assist attorneys prosecuting doctors who were accused of medical experiments on concentration camp inmates.  She move to the U.S. in 1948 and has dedicated her life to the causes of civil and human rights and social justice.  As a peace delegate, Epstein has journeyed to Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Cambodia.  Her autobiography, Remembering Is Not Enough: The Autobiography of Hedy Epstein, was published in Germany in 1999.  In 2001, Epstein was featured as one the survivors in the Academy-Award Winning documentary feature film, Into the Arms of Strangers: Stories of the Kindertransport.
