Curator of Furniture The High Point Museum is seeking a Curator of Furniture to head up a two year Furniture Heritage Project that will culminate in a major exhibition. High Point, NC was once known as the Furniture Capital of the World. The city still hosts the Home Furnishings Market twice a year that showcases the newest trends in furniture to thousands of attendees from home and abroad. The High Point Museum acquired a collection of furniture manufacturing equipment when Furniture Discovery Center closed in 2004. If awarded a $150,000 grant from IMLS (TBA July 2007), it is the intention of the museum to hire a full time Curator of Furniture to v Research the NC furniture industry, especially those companies and workers based in High Point and the immediately surrounding communities, and artifacts and documents that illustrate this history v Oversee the collecting of stories from people who have worked in the industry in diverse areas such as manufacturing, management, design, marketing, or retail sales. (Possibly using local College students) v Identify representative examples of the furniture made in and around High Point and North Carolina and make recommendations to the Collections Committee. v Identify documentary materials related to the industry (catalogues and business records) that will aid in telling the story of furniture manufacture in this state. v Serve as the chief historian for an exhibition about this cultural heritage to open April 2009. Work in collaboration with a design team that includes staff and outside consultants and vendors to create an exhibition based on research and collections developed under the grant that will present the story of North Carolina furniture to the public and will inspire additional collecting, preservation, educational, and furniture heritage activities. Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. or MA in history or museum studies, with research and exhibition experience. Ability to work well with diverse community members is essential. Excellent written and verbal communication skills: effective budget and scheduling management experience. Self motivated, but able to work as a team player. Background/familiarity with High Point or furniture history in general would be preferred. Valid driver's license with acceptable driving history.
