Museum Specialist
The
The Biodiversity Institute, a unit of The
University of Kansas, conducts research in evolution and biodiversity science,
maintains collections of living and extinct animals and plants documenting its
work, and provides related programs and resources for the benefit of the
public. The Project Assistant is responsible for assisting the curators and
move coordinator in the Institute's Division of Mammalogy in all aspects of the
move of the collections to a new facility. The tasks associated with this work
will include, but are not limited to, conducting taxonomic inventories and
assessments of the collections, data and pest surveys, packing and unpacking of
specimens, management of data and records, overseeing student assistants and
coordinating schedules. This is a limited term (1-year) full-time position.
Required Qualifications
1) Bachelor's or related degree in biology
relevant to the field of museum work and one year of experience in museum work.
2) Knowledge of mammalian classification and nomenclature as demonstrated in
the application materials.
3) Demonstrated experience working with detailed and complex information (such
experience might include experience in the care and management of museum
collections and associated data) by application materials.
4) Experience with and knowledge of modern PC software (Windows XP and related
MicroSoft products) as demonstrated in the application materials.
Preferred Qualifications
1) Advanced degree in vertebrate biology
or closely related field
2) Demonstrated experience in or knowledge of biological research collections,
especially mammal collections
3) Previous supervisory experience
