Staff and volunteers of museums, historical organizations, and libraries, and members of the general public are invited to participate in free training on caring for collections this summer. The workshops will be delivered via satellite uplinks to numerous locations around the state. It will also be offered as streaming video via the Nebraska State Historical Society and NET web sites.

Three of the workshops will be presented by conservators from the Nebraska
State Historical Society's Ford Conservation Center. Dates and workshop topics include:

September 11 A fourth workshop organized by the Nebraska Library Commission with presenters from University of Nebraska-Lincoln will focus on care of materials destined to be digitized for the commission's Nebraska Memories website.

Each workshop is scheduled to run from 10-3, CDT. Workshops will originate from the distance learning facility at NET, 1800 N 33rd Street in Lincoln, Nebraska. Individuals are welcome to participate on-site. But staff, volunteers, and interested members of the general public are also encouraged to participate at
distance learning locations around the state. Most of the receivers for this satellite uplink are in community colleges, public schools, and county extension offices. This will be a one-way video link, but conservators will
be able to accept phoned-in questions from workshop participants. The workshops will also be offered as streaming video on the NET web site; web participants are also welcome to call in.

Individuals interested in participating in the workshops should register at their earliest convenience To take advantage of this significant and no-cost training opportunity, please contact the Nebraska State Historical Society and indicate the workshops in which workshops you'd like to participate. Call 402-471-3272 or email [log in to unmask] for more information and to register. For more information about technical requirements for web streaming, visit http://www.netnebraska.org/television/

The workshops are part of a larger project that will include broadcast of a one-hour program on NET, "Saving Nebraska's Treasures," that is slated for broadcast July 26 on the statewide NET network. A web site with preliminary information about preservation of family and community collections will be launched at the
same time. After workshops are completed, an expanded website will provide access to practical suggestions people can use to improve the long-term condition of objects that are important to families and communities.

The distance learning workshops are part of a partnership between the Nebraska State Historical Society, NET, and the Nebraska Library Commission with funding provided in part by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Sciences and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting Partnership for a Nation of Learners program.
