This is such a shame as it is a wonderful program for high school students in the museum-rich District. I’m hoping someone or some institution will step forward and save this for the students. Let’s get the word out…

WASHINGTON -- Trouble lies ahead for a unique high school program in the District that prepares students for careers in museum studies.
The Smithsonian Institution cut funding for the Duke Ellington School of the Arts museum studies program two years ago. School officials said that without the museum's backing, the program will likely shut down soon.
The Smithsonian had supported the program since 1991.
"This program costs approximately $220,000 a year to run effectively. The Smithsonian's grant represented $155,000 of that total amount, and we have just not been able to secure that level of funding to continue the program," said Principal Rory Pullens.
Ellington, which is located in the Georgetown sector of the city, is better known for its music and acting programs, officials said. Artists like Stevie Wonder often make generous donations to the school.
Students are now protesting the possible end of the museum studies program that's trained students for all types of careers. The museum studies program course of study lasts for four years.
"This is a tailor-made program for students who are interested in the professional work that goes on behind the scenes at a museum. We are building a new generation of curators, directors, exhibit designers and museum educators," said the program's director Marta Reid Stewart.
Pullens said seven other school programs have curbed costs to keep the museum studies program alive, but the school needs new funding if it is to survive.
The Smithsonian did not respond to telephone calls placed by News4 on Thursday.
School officials said they have begun reaching out to Mayor Adrian Fenty and School Board President Robert Bobb in an effort to save the program.
