Montpelier, the General Henry Knox Museum, an historic house museum in midcoast Maine, is pleased to post a

paid summer internship for a student of historic landscape.  The museum, a reconstruction of the 1794 mansion

built by the country’s first Secretary of War, presents an interesting convergence of several historic

landscape elements: eighteenth century interpretation of Knox's formal and agricultural gardens at the

original Montpelier, a Colonial Revival plan created for the reconstruction by the Olmsted Brothers; and

landscape features implemented by Hans Heistad.  The museum has a permanent staff of three FT employees and

over sixty active volunteers, and is actively planning the growth of the museum campus.  For more

information, see www.knoxmuseum.org.

The Landscape Intern will be responsible for a major project: creating presentation materials about the

several historic threads in the museum’s landscaping and preliminary plans for representing them, which will

be used to initiate a major landscaping campaign at the museum. The intern will be able to draw on a large

body of research already completed on the museum’s landscape, but some additional research will be necessary.

The intern will work closely with the museum’s Director of Education, to whom they will report, as well as

the museum’s landscape committee, and a consulting landscape architect.  Undergraduate or graduate students

with a background in landscape design and historic preservation are encouraged to apply.  A high level of self-motivation

and initiative is required.  Internships are ¾  time for 11 weeks.  Some Saturdays and evenings may be required.

Starting and ending dates are flexible.  The Landscape Intern will be provided housing in a beautiful studio apartment on

the ocean (a short drive from the museum) and paid a stipend of $1,500.

To apply, please send a letter describing your interest and experience with museums or nonprofits, a resume
