Greetings, listers!I asked my father about the phonograph query as it is one of his "projects." I can provide his email address off-list.Here's his reply:When a LP Vinyl record is made, the frequency response is altered to
increase the high frequency sounds and decrease the low frequency sounds.
Later, when the record is played back, the high frequency sounds are
reduced and the low frequency sounds boosted. The "increasing" and
decreasing is performed within the electronics of the preamplifier (The
jargon is called the RIAA equalization). This method of boosting and
reducing helps to eliminate the scratches present in records. When the
correct circuits are used, the record sounds the way it was recorded.
The RIAA electronics is NOT present in computer sound cards. Therefore if
the output from the record player goes directly into the computer, the
record sound will not be as it was recorded. Old sound systems had the RIAA
electronics in the preamplifier when the selector was placed in the phone
position.
Some software programs can "fix" the record sound if it went directly into
the sound card mic input, but the best why is to connect the phonograph
into a old preamp with a "phone" input and then take the output from the
preamp into the "line" input of the sound card.
