Coordinator, Yager Museum of Art and Culture, Hartwick College, Oneonta, New York

Hartwick College invites applications for the position of Coordinator of the Yager Museum of Art and Culture to work collaboratively with the academic community to integrate our diverse collection with the College’s curriculum.  The Museum holds 16,000 Native American archeological and ethnographic objects from the Upper Susquehanna Valley, the Southwest, Central and South America; and a substantial collection of fine arts with particular strengths in 19th and 20th century American paintings.

The Coordinator will have the opportunity to implement the new mission and recommendations of a recent advisory committee report that calls for a “…teaching museum uniquely positioned to advance the aims of Hartwick College’s liberal arts mission.”  We are looking for an energetic and creative professional who is willing and capable of working with faculty “…to establish a deep intercultural, contextual, and aesthetic understanding of the origins, histories, and character of the artifacts for which Hartwick College acts as steward and preservationist.”

Preferred Qualifications:  Appropriate terminal degree in museum studies, American studies, anthropology, art history or related field and five years of museum management or curatorial experience are desired.  A combination of collections management and exhibit preparation experience is highly desired. Successful experience in community outreach, fund raising, higher education, and grant writing are important.

Hartwick College is located in Oneonta, a city of approximately 15,000 situated one hour from Albany in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains of central New York State.  Founded in 1797, the College is built on a 425-acre main campus and includes a 900-acre Pine Lake environmental campus nearby.  The faculty are committed to quality undergraduate teaching and experiential learning in keeping with the College’s commitments to “The Liberal Arts in Practice: Connecting the Classroom to the World.”  They seek to prepare people to meet the diverse personal, intellectual, and social challenges of an increasingly global community.  Additional information about the College is available on our website www.hartwick.edu.
