Position Title:                Curator of Collections                            Closing Date:    Open Until Filled

Status:                          Full-time with full benefits                      Salary Range:    $2,917 - $3,250 plus benefits

 

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Responsible for the care and maintenance of objects held in trust by the Boulder History Museum. Performs a variety of tasks including organization of collections, storage maintenance, inventory of collections, collections research and identification of artifacts. Catalogues, conditions and reports new acquisitions and other artifacts in the collection. Negotiates loans and acquisitions and prepares and researches artifacts for exhibit. Researches and provides information about the collection to the public and researchers. Participates in museum committees and activities and provides technical assistance to other museums throughout the region.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Identify, research and catalogue artifacts in the Museums collection. This includes: identification, description, provenance and donor information using a personal computer, digital camera, scanner and the Past Perfect database.
  • Assist with selection and preparation of artifacts for use in the Museum’s exhibits.
  • Prepare artifact mounts and assist with artifact installation.
  • Negotiate loans for exhibits.
  • Unpack and pack objects and prepare condition reports.
  • Assist in the pick up and return of loaned objects.
  • Responsible for managing and overseeing the object storage facility.
  • Respond to potential donors and complete necessary paperwork for potential donations.
  • Conduct environmental monitoring and integrated pest management procedures for all artifact storage and exhibit spaces.
  • Attend meetings as necessary.
  • Research the collections to provide information to the public and researchers as needed.
  • Recruit and supervise collections interns and volunteers.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: Knowledge of professional museum standards, practices and ethics. Knowledge of artifact care and handling techniques of a wide variety of historic materials. Knowledge of preventative conservation practices. Skill in museum techniques including cataloging, condition reporting, artifact care and handling, storage techniques and object mounting. Skill in working with objects which have an irreplaceable historical value. Skill in research. Skill in computer use. Experience with Past Perfect software preferred. Skill in written and oral communications and working with a variety of people including donors, lenders, volunteers, researchers and the public. Knowledge of the history of Colorado and the American West. Looking for a detail oriented, highly organized, resourceful, reliable team player.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: BA/BS in History or Museum Studies (Master’s preferred) with minimum 3 years experience in the collections management field. Must have a valid driver’s license, a reliable vehicle and insurance and be able to lift, carry and roll objects and materials up to 35 - 40 pounds.
