Dear all,

Very good advice and anecdotes on this subject. When I got out of college it was useless finding a job with a BA - we're talking early 1980s here. I did go for a master's and certificate in museum studies which helped me land my first job - very low pay, very low on the ladder, but it was a start. Now I'm wondering about getting a PhD or, just retire. HA! Since I'm not really interested in teaching nor doing research, a PhD would be useless (money-wise maybe) but higher learning is never a wasted thing.

What is apparent in this thread is that when you go on that job interview, poise and confidence is vital to how you appear to the one interviewing you. If you have good communication skills (aside from the necessary requirements) you will do well, but it might take awhile to land that job. Hang in there those of you who are seeking jobs!

I haven't been surprised to see more and more, "Master's Preferred" in position announcements. This also tends to close the gap for people in protected classes so we should see this widen again before too long.
