Curatorial Internship, Summer 2007

The Curatorial Intern will focus on exhibits research, production and maintenance; however, responsibilities may also include conservation and collections management work. The intern’s primary projects will relate to work on the Museum’s permanent gallery and upcoming temporary exhibits, and may include identifying and researching potential items for exhibit, coordinating incoming loan items, and script writing. The intern works directly with the Curator or a department head responsible for the project, under the supervision of the Curator. Projects will involve various Museum resources such as ship's plans, photographic, and art archives; film and manuscript collections; three-dimensional artifacts, historic small boat collection; or the Museum's World War II submarine U.S.S. COBIA.

Qualifications:

Must have excellent research and writing skills, be self-motivated, and able to work independently with little supervision.  Preference will be given to candidates enrolled in history, museum studies or public history programs.

 

Compensation is $7.50 per hour for up to 320 hours of paid work; start date and work schedule are flexible.

Collections Internships, Summer 2007

Two positions available

 

Responsibilities:

The Wisconsin Maritime Museum is pleased to offer two paid collections internships for the summer of 2007.  The two Collections Interns will work side-by-side on a variety of tasks in follow-up to a recently completed move of the Museum’s offsite storage facility.  Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, inventory tasks, data entry, artifact research, records reconciliation, and other collections management duties. 

 

Interns may help with additional collections and research projects as needed. 

 

Qualifications:

Must be self-motivated, detail-oriented, able to work both as a team and independently, and have strong organizational skills. Preference will be given to candidates who express a desire to pursue a career in museums or a related field, and who are enrolled in a related academic program. Some previous experience in museums or a related field is desired.  Familiarity with PastPerfect Museum Software is a plus.

 

Compensation is $7.50 per hour for a maximum of 320 hours of paid work; start date and work schedule are flexible.

Grace E. Swensen and Robert J. Peppard Collections Internship, Summer 2007

 

 

Responsibilities:

Intern will work with the Registrar/Collections Manager to accession, catalog and digitize the Grace E. Swensen and Robert J. Peppard Collection of photographic materials, postcards, slides, scrapbooks and other materials.  This extensive collection documents several types of Great Lakes vessels, including car ferries, tugs, dredges, passenger vessels, freighters, private boats, bulk carriers, whalebacks and others, along with several important Great Lakes transportation companies.

 

Qualifications:

Must be self-motivated, detail-oriented, able to work independently, and have strong computer skills. Preference will be given to candidates who express a desire to pursue a career in museums, archives, or a closely related field, and who are enrolled in a related academic program. Some previous experience in museums, archives, or a related field is desired. Familiarity with PastPerfect Museum Software is a plus.

 

Compensation is $7.50 per hour for a maximum of 480 hours of paid work; start date and work schedule are flexible.
