Certainly one way that local historical societies can build membership is by encouraging gift memberships for community members who have moved away.  This is a way of continuing to keep in touch with their hometown/county/locality.  Start by promoting gift memberships among your current membership, and then throw it open to the community under the banner of “what better way to keep in touch with things happening at home?”  You should have members from all over the country!

Good luck.

Hello,
As our membership is not increasing as we would wish, it's time for a membership drive in the community.  Apart from getting articles in the local papers and having tables at our events, can anyone offer further advice about conducting/organizing such a drive to "reinvigorate" the membership?  We are a small historical society with future plans for a permanent museum.

Thanks,
Susan
