There is a great deal of information available on the subject of
deaccessioning.   The top three publications are:
New Registration Museum Registrations Methods (Buck and Gilmore, ed)
A Legal Primer on Managing Museum Collections (Malaro)
     A Deaccession Reader (Weil, ed)

It is critical that you have a formal deaccession policy and accompanying
procedures.   These books can provide detailed information on what needs to
be included, as well as a wealth of information on associated legal and
collections issues.

Run, do not walk, to these sources.

Subject: Deaccession

Hi All,
We are looking into deaccessioning a large nubmer of works in our
collections. While we have deaccessioned in the past a few works, they have
always either been in poor condition or because we needed to return a work
to the owner.
I am looking for guidelines and proceedures for the deaccession process. I
would be most grateful to hear any suggestions you might have.
I can also be contacted off list at HYPERLINK

Thanks,
Ron Hillel
