Drayton Hall, a historic site of
the National Trust for Historic Preservation, seeks an experienced, creative,
and innovative professional as Curator Education. Reporting to the Director of Museum
Interpretation, the Curator of Education will supervise all education programs and interpretive
staff; network with teachers and education personnel locally, statewide, and
throughout the region; oversee education programs and the development of new
programs, teacher training workshops and institutes, and create pre-and-post
visit lesson plans that relate to all of the education programs
offered.
- Contribute
to the overall success of Drayton Hall in achieving its
mission.
- Responsible
for the management and supervision of interpretive staff for education
programs, downtown walking tours, and other educational initiatives.
- Develop
new education programs, including on-line, web-based initiatives, and monitor
and evaluate existing programs, including pre- and post-visit lesson plans and
activities for teachers, ensuring that they meet and adhere to state
curriculum standards.
- Manage
all aspects of special education initiatives, providing critical evaluation
and suggestions for future improvement.
- Network
with school teachers to coordinate Drayton Hall programs into their pacing
schedules. Provide lesson plans
related specifically to the education programs booked.
- Assist
with the creation and supervision of teacher workshops and training institutes
at Drayton Hall.
- Network
with local school board representatives as well as the South Carolina state
curriculum coordinator.
- Assist
in research projects relating to the history of Drayton Hall and the
Lowcountry region.
- Assist
in fund-raising and grant-writing.
- Be
a team player and have the flexibility to be able to lead, follow, and support
colleagues in a tactful, positive way.
Bachelor’s Degree in education,
museum education, public history, or related field required, Master's degree
strongly preferred. At least three years experience in classroom teaching and/or
conducting public history and educational school programs with direct experience
creating and developing such programs. At least one year supervisory experience.
Extensive knowledge of history and its connections to other disciplines
preferred. Must have strong oral and written communication skills.
