I spent a number of years as an education consultant – working with school districts throughout the country.

An independent school district means that the small town has its own school system, independent of the county. For instance, in Maryland there are only county school systems and of course the large Baltimore City system. Each of these school districts has way over 50K kids. In many other areas there are tiny “independent” school districts. I’ve worked with independent districts where the total district enrollment is below 500 students and others with 10,000 or more. The strict definition of an independent school district is one in which high school subjects that meet State standards are taught. Therefore the district can “stand alone,” and does not have to send its older students to a large consolidated high school – usually a county high school. (Historically, small towns built grammar schools to keep the smaller kids close to home. The students who continued past 8th grade traveled to the county high school.)

These little districts are very political and the principal becomes a demi-god. Kind of a big fish in a small pond syndrome. It wouldn’t surprise me if this isn’t a thinly veiled attempt to get rid of a potential drain on the school district’s resources – a 28 year teacher who would probably retire shortly and start drawing a pension. If I were the teacher’s attorney one of the things I would be looking at would be termination records for a pattern.

This is an independent school district - does that mean it's a charter school??? If so - there's probably no protection, even for a 28-year honored teacher....
