COLLECTIONS ASSISTANT

EXHIBITIONS AND COLLECTION SERVICES DEPARTMENT

POSITION PURPOSE:

Assist in the care and maintenance of the collections of the Denver Art Museum, including paintings, sculpture, textiles, ethnographic material, furniture and paper objects.  This position will play a supporting role in the Collections Management division by implementing projects that maintain the museum’s goals of best practices. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

•       Assist with aspects of collections management that relate to inventory and      location tracking, correct archival housing, art movement, and the general      care of the collection in storage

•       Provide safe and appropriate access to collections for staff (including         curators, photography, conservation, etc.), outside researchers, education      groups and tours, under the direction of the Collections Manager.

•       Assist with move of collections to the new Hamilton Building collections        storage area.

•       Assist in supervising volunteers and organizing volunteer projects

•       Assist in monitoring environmental conditions for artwork in storage and        display areas.

•       Assist with installation and dismantling of permanent and temporary     exhibitions as needed

•       Share responsibility of data entry on the Museum’s collection database

OTHER DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

•       Attend seminars and classes in relevant subjects as requested

•       Other duties as assigned

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITY

•       Knowledge of museum collections management best practices

•       Knowledge of and experience in art handling

•       Knowledge of preventive conservation methods, archival materials, storage       techniques, and archival mount-making

•       Working knowledge of museum collections databases and all Microsoft     computer applications

•       Working knowledge of digital cameras

•       Strong organizational and interpersonal skills

•       Detail oriented

•       Ability to work flexible hours when required

•       Ability to work independently or with a team

•       Must be willing to travel and work off-site

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE 

•       BA with major coursework in art history, anthropology, archaeology or   museum studies,   Master’s preferred.

•       Minimum 2 years working experience in collections management

•       Experience in art handling and exhibit installation

MATERIAL AND EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED

•       Computer and ARGUS database

•       Hand and power tools

•       Lift equipment (forklift, rugger, stacker)

•       Camera (35M, Polaroid, digital)

WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES

•       Temperature changes

•       Subject to many interruptions

•       Lifting, pushing or pulling 50 pounds

•       Standing, walking, sitting, kneeling and climbing

•       Eye/hand/foot coordination
