Beverly Serrell has published an outstanding guideline covering almost
anything you would like to know concerning exhibit labels.  The title is
"Exhibit Labels - An Interpretive Approach".  The publisher is AltaMira.

The Smithsonian has accessibility guidelines for exhibition design on their
website, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art has a publication of standards
