About the Andrew County Museum and Community

A private, non-profit organization, the Museum is housed in a modern, 14,000 sq. ft. facility located in Savannah, Missouri.  Savannah, 15 miles north of St. Joseph and 65 miles north of Kansas City, is the county seat of a growing agricultural community with about 15,000 residents.   It offers a small-town atmosphere with shops, restaurants, and businesses surrounding the town square and restored county courthouse.  Andrew Countians enjoy a wide range of recreational activities including community parks, playgrounds, swimming pool, baseball diamonds, tennis courts and the award-winning 18-hole Duncan Hills Golf Course that many larger towns would be hard-pressed to match.  The Savannah R-III school district has an enrollment of over 2300 students and the district has been consistently recognized by the Missouri State Department of Education as worthy of receiving the "Distinctive Performance Award."

Over the past decade, the Museum has:

w        adopted a strategic plan, guiding the Museum in a transformation from an institution  with static displays of  “legacy collections” to a dynamic, active place with exciting, new, interpretive exhibits;

w        completed an $830,000 capital campaign to support the new exhibit program;

w        won passage of a county-wide sales tax to support the Museum’s annual operating expenses;

w        researched, planned, designed and installed a 900 sq. ft. orientation exhibit  which summarizes Andrew County’s history and serves as introduction to A Rural Way of Life, a new, permanent, 3,900-square-foot exhibit.

Over the next two years, the Museum will complete A Rural Way of Life’s additional 3,000 square feet and introduce new programs for visitors.
