The Fairfield Historical Society seeks a resourceful, motivated and skilled museum professional to 
fulfill the position of Project Registrar. The primary responsibility will be to coordinate and execute 
a collections move from the Society’s existing headquarters to the newly constructed Fairfield 
Museum and History Center.  The Registrar will oversee inventorying, data collecting, digitizing, 
packing, and re-housing artifacts, archive and library materials.  He/she will oversee hiring of fine 
arts movers and library movers and will be responsible for the security, care, handling, records 
management and tracking of all objects during the move period.  The Registrar will also 
coordinate the move of portions of the collection to an off-site storage space.  This is a 17-
month, IMLS grant-funded position, with a salary range in the mid to upper 30s.  Position will 
begin in early fall 2006. 

Requirements:  Five to seven years of relevant work experience, including preparing and packing 
artifact collections for moving. Must be an organized, careful, and effective manager, able to 
oversee completion of multiple tasks within a specific timetable.  Must be familiar with collections 
database systems and competent in using digital photography equipment.  Good communication 
skills, flexibility, patience and the ability to train and supervise an entry-level Assistant Registrar 
are key. Knowledge of handling techniques for a wide variety of object types, especially those 
specific to textiles and costumes, is desirable.  Knowledge of library cataloguing systems is a plus.  
Normal ability to climb ladders and to lift up to 25 pounds is required.
