I am sure animals are what you are after...BUT this might be worthwhile to check out....

Another note - Farming or early agriculture was a MAJOR component of life in the prehistoric midwest region especially around Chicago. The FOUR SISTERS (Pumpkins, Corn, Beans & Acorns?) were the four major crops harvested by early Native American cultures in the region and were also the indigenous plants of this region. A funny thing remains in that Illinois continually ranks either ONE or TWO in the nation in the production of PUMPKINS as a cash crop. One of the biggest pumpkin canning facilities in the US is in Morton, Illinois.

In any case....whatever your exhibit tackles in terms of FARMING it seems essential that you at least address the cultural history and significance of Native American subsistence farming in this region. In fact...the Des Plaines River..which runs right by the zoo...nearly....is the site of one of the largest encampments in the region at the point of the portage between the Chicago River and Des Plaines which fed into the Illinois River. This was a major junction.

Although subsistence farming is certainly different than the farming we are familiar with it still maintains one of the hallmarks which is that people remained within settled locations or communities for either the whole or at least a great part of the year in order to work the land etc.

Please post:

Hi friends and colleagues,

I am looking for examples of outstanding exhibits and programs that involve farm related themes and experiences. Any favorites out there? Anything that struck you as particularly thoughtful and insightful?

Would be particularly interested in ways the farm and farming has been addressed in other types of museums outside of living history farms.

Thanks,
Dave
