Subject: Re: [MUSEUM-L] Collecting Moving Images

Hi Noah,

Welcome to the listserve and the museum community.

Moving images of various forms are indeed becoming increasingly popular in
our collections. I have not personally acquired any that are on traditional
media, although I am aware of more than one artist still working with film
or magnetic media recordings. Presumably for the "retro" feel and visual
effect. I am aware of one that also likes the sound a 16mm projector makes
in conjunction with her work as well as the progressive damage incurred by
the film. Preservation techniques for such materials are generally agreed
upon and standardized.

All of my acquisitions have been in digital form, on DVD or CD. Conditions
and methodologies for these newer media are still in committee, although it
is becoming increasingly clear that they are not to be considered permanent
storage media, and that their issues should be addressed in our policies. I
am currently gathering information on the topic of digital preservation,
policy, and access for a presentation, and would be happy to share notes.
We definitely need industry standards for these media as well.

Hello,
I'm new to this listserv. I'm a grad student at UCLA. Currently I am
doing some research on museums' approaches towards moving images. It
seems that increasingly that the art museum world
is collecting moving images. So I would be interested in, if there
are any, standards in the collection of film and video. I'm
interested in curatorial issues surrounding moving imagery but i'm also
very interested in things like preservation, access, copyright and
access.
If anyone out there has any advice on the subject, my email is

Thanks in advance,
Noah
