Care of Paintings Fee: $530 Course Dates: June 20-21 Registration Deadline: May 15, 2006 Instructor: Cynthia Berry You'll learn the basic structure of easel paintings; causes of painting deterioration; examination methodologies; identification of changes and types of damage; condition reporting and documentation strategies; and the standards for storing, handling, displaying/installing, and transporting paintings. Hands-on practicum sessions will give participants the opportunity to handle, examine, and condition report paintings as well as re-house paintings in frames, pack paintings for local transport, and secure their backings. Conservation treatment is not covered in this course. Environmental Monitoring and Control Fee: $860 Course Dates: June 21-24, 2006 Registration Deadline: May 15, 2006 Instructor: Susan Maltby This course offers an in-depth study of the monitoring and control of museum environment, and an introduction to its effects on organic and inorganic materials. Course work will include: identifying the environmental factors (e.g., light, relative humidity, temperature, pollutants, vibration, and pests-both insects and vermin) that can adversely affect museum collections; a review of the terms commonly used to describe the museum environment; high and low tech environmental monitoring techniques including the use of light meters, recoding hygrothermographs, computer data loggers, indicator strips and psychrometers; strategies for mitigating and controlling environmental problems; creating a pollutant-free environment; and integrated pest management. Packing & Shipping Fee: $750 Course Dates: June 14-17, 2006 Registration Deadline: May 15, 2006 Instructor: John Molini This course covers safe handling, packing, and transport of works of art and artifacts. Problem scenarios will be presented for resolution in hands-on practicum sessions. Topics covered include: risk assessment, decision-making, and related issues in artifact transportation; crate design and construction (e.g., slat, one time, fully battened touring crates, and specialized); interior packing including methods and materials for 2D and 3D objects; design techniques for specialized components (e.g., bracing, double boxing, packing frames, and multiple objects packaging); and soft packing including decision-making process, material selection and use, and techniques/methods. Rigging & Moving of Fine Arts/Artifacts Fee: $1390 Course Dates: June 20-24 Registration Deadline: May 15, 2006 Instructor: Roger Machin and Dean Langworthy The focus of this course is to teach participants how to safely plan and execute moves of heavy and/or fragile museum artifacts weighing up to 5000 lbs. Techniques will include equipment readily available to the heritage professional as well as equipment used by professional riggers. This course includes a brief history of rigging practices and technologies; how rigging crews and boxes are organized; mitigating the negative effects of rigging on surrounding structures and substrates using crates, pallets, and dunnage; using a forklift; common rigging problems and solutions; and specifications of and ordering cranes.
