Two paid education internships at Dallas Heritage Village

Position:	Educational Intern

				The mission of the Dallas County Heritage Society is to preserve representative structures, artifacts, and other historical materials related to the history of Dallas and North Central Texas between the years 1840-1910 and, through educational programming, interpret these historical materials to the public, particularly the youth of our state.

Reports to:	Curator of Education	

Internship Period:  Summer 2006:  9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday –Friday
			Start dates can be flexible, but the internship is 8 weeks long.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Educational Intern position shall consist of two main phases:
*	Research the educational content of museum websites.  The intern will investigate all kinds of museums and cultural organizations, not just history museums.   How do these museums use their website as a teaching tool?  The intern shall also survey some of these museums to discover what works and what does not.  The intern will create a written summary with web links of some of the best examples.
*	The second phase will consist of creating content for an educational component of Dallas Heritage Village’s website.  This may or may not include online curriculum, a virtual tour, or simple games.  Historical research will be necessary as the content is created.  The focus is on spreading our educational mission to a wider audience through our web site.  The intern will not be required to do the programming for the website.
*	The intern will also assist in the final planning and execution of one of our signature special events, Old Fashioned Fourth.  These duties may include craft preparation and assisting with one of the activities on the day of the event.  The intern is required to work on July 4.

Requirements:  
The ideal candidate will be a motivated, self-starter who has an interest in history and/or education with strong research and writing skills.  Creative thinkers are encouraged!

Salary:  $2000.  This internship made possible by the ExxonMobil Community Summer Jobs Program.

Position:  Summer Camp Coordinator

		The mission of the Dallas County Heritage Society is to preserve representative structures, artifacts, and other historical materials related to the history of Dallas and North Central Texas between the years 1840-1910 and, through educational programming, interpret these historical materials to the public, particularly the youth of our State.  The Society’s primary vehicle for accomplishing this mission is its operation of Dallas Heritage Village as a historical museum.

Summer Programs	
		Dallas Heritage Village hosts three different week-long summer camp sessions for children ages 7 to 11 years of age.  Children attending Dallas Heritage Village’s camps “live” the history of North Texas by visiting the museum’s historic buildings, creating crafts of the time, and participating in hands-on history activities.  

Responsibilities
		Work with the Curator of Education to: create a hands-on approach to teaching children; develop daily lesson plans incorporating the museum’s resources; select materials needed for “make & take” activities and games; and coordinate the schedule of daily activities. The position is particularly suitable for students studying education, museum studies and/or history.

Requirements	
		The ideal candidate will be a motivated, self-starter who has an interest in history and/or education with strong organizational skills and an ability to manage multiple responsibilities.  Experience teaching and/or planning lessons for children is a plus.

		Monday – Friday, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.; May 31 – August 1
